Underhill is one of the first green-roof homes in New Jersey: it conserves energy, reduces storm water runoff, and preserves habitat for plants and animals. Supporting deep soil on its roof, it goes beyond simple green roofing to allow a full restoration of landscape over the top of it: shrubs, small trees, and other plants native to its woodland location. With 2750 square feet of green roof now installed and planted, Underhill is 70% complete!
The first day of Spring 2017 marked the completion of most exterior trimwork, installation of 400 square feet of subfloor, and the installation of our well pump. The pump draws water from 480 feet underground, so it was a daunting task, but we did it ourselves and it works perfectly. Underhill has running water!
In October 2015, Build Underhill welcomed new sponsors, distributor Tower Windows and Doors and manufacturer Marvin Windows and Doors! Working together, they provided the energy-efficient doors and windows of this innovative house at their cost. Our thanks to Tower, to Marvin, and to Tower's expert and dedicated representative, Jules Rakus!
In July 2015, Build Underhill welcomed a new sponsor, Disdero Lumber, for providing 2500 square feet of Lock Deck roof decking at their cost! Lock Deck is an engineered wood product with the strength to support Underhill's earth roof, and the beauty to form an unforgettable ceiling within the dwelling. Thanks to Disdero Lumber, and to their Vice President, Gunnar Brinck!
In 2014, Build Underhill welcomed a new sponsor, Charlotte Pipe & Foundry Company. Working through their local distributor, Maloney & Curcio, they have donated FlowGuard Gold supply pipe, and PVC waste pipe, for Underhill. Thanks also to Lubrizol, maker of the plastics that go into these pipes - and their superb rep, Dave DeAngelis, for making the connection between Underhill and these generous sponsors!
We also welcomed Kohler Company, maker of fixtures for kitchen and bath. Kohler has donated all the fixtures for our green roof house! These include water-conserving dual-flush toilets and low-flow 1.5gal/min shower heads. Special thanks to Felix Plaisir, Kohler LEED Green Associate, for making Underhill not only greener, but more beautiful!
